Excel to PDF, sheet by sheet
The worksheets in your workbook go into one PDF, each starting on a new page. The tool has no layout options of its own: orientation, margins and page breaks all come from each sheet's page setup.
A wide sheet can therefore push its last columns onto extra pages. A few page setup changes in Excel, listed further down, fix that before you convert.
This is how to save an Excel spreadsheet as a PDF without leaving Excel open on the other end to view it.

What happens to a workbook during conversion
When you click Convert to PDF, the workbook is uploaded and opened by a spreadsheet program on our server. It prints every sheet to PDF with the page settings stored in the file, and the PDF comes back to your browser with a preview of its pages and the original and converted file sizes.
Each conversion is allowed up to six minutes, and a workbook that needs longer is stopped with an error. Several workbooks are sent one at a time, and the button counts through them as each one finishes.
A single PDF is named after the workbook, with spaces and special characters turned into underscores and our site name added at the end.
Fit a spreadsheet onto PDF pages

Set a print area
Select the range you need, then choose Print Area, Set Print Area on the Page Layout tab. Only that range is exported.

Fit every column on a page
Under Scale to Fit on the Page Layout tab, set Width to 1 page. Rows still run onto as many pages as they need.

Turn wide sheets sideways
Set Orientation to Landscape on the Page Layout tab to get more columns across each page.

Save just before converting
If figures depend on today's date or on other files, open the workbook in Excel and save it first, so the saved values are up to date.

No. A PDF can't calculate, so each cell shows the result it displays in Excel, not the formula behind it, and an error such as #DIV/0! appears just as it does in the cell. Keep the workbook for anything you still need to change.
Gridlines only appear when they are set to print. Tick Print under Gridlines in the Sheet Options on the Page Layout tab, save, and convert again.
A number that is too wide for its column is shown as #### in the sheet, and the PDF prints what the sheet shows. Widen the column or shrink the font in Excel, save, and convert again.
There is no sheet picker, so every sheet goes in. Save a copy of the workbook with only the sheet you need, or remove the pages you don't want afterwards with Delete Pages.
Yes. Workbooks saved with the .xls file extension go through the same conversion as .xlsx files, and a file with no extension at all is treated as .xlsx.
Not directly: this page takes XLS and XLSX only. Open a CSV in Excel and save it as a workbook, or in Numbers choose File, Export To, Excel. Then set the page up and convert the result.
Yes. Drop them together and they download as one ZIP called converted-pdfs, with each PDF named after its workbook and a separate download button for each. If one file fails, the others are still converted and the failure is listed with its reason.
Page numbers set in a sheet's header or footer come through as they are. To number the finished PDF from start to end instead, run it through Number Pages.
